And the Award For Best Costume Exhibit Goes To…

20th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design at FIDM! Hooray! Just hope they keep their acceptance speech short!

But in all seriousness, this exhibit is pretty special. The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising has a plethora of alumni in the film industry. As a result, annually at Oscar time the school’s museum is loaned several costumes from the previous year’s films. These costumes come from a variety of movies – romance, action, drama, family fare…you name it, they got it. As an added bonus most of the nominees for Costume Design at the Academy Awards are represented. As you can imagine, they’ve got some pretty great stuff.

I make a point to visit the exhibit every year as I love to see the costumes up close. This year was a stellar one as not only did it include costumes from current films but it also had artifacts from old Hollywood. Fred Astaire’s dancing shoes, Marlene Dietrich’s gown, and Mae West’s corset were but a few of the amazing artifacts.

And the current costumes were none to shabby either – period dresses from Jane Eyre, superhero costumes from Thor and Captain America, and cute, colorful (!) duds from The Artist are but some of the highlights.Check out a few below!
