Brew News Featuring Angel City Brewery and Oggi’s Sports l Brewhouse l Pizza

Years ago, if you had told me one day I would write a blog post about beer (let alone multiple posts!) I would have thought you were joking. Beer? I don’t like beer! Well, times have changed and the beverage went from something I didn’t like at all to something I would tolerate to something that I began to enjoy and, dare I say it, love. And lately, I’ve been loving it a lot so I’d thought I’d share a roundup of some of my favorite finds.

First, let’s start with something a little different. You may recall a previous post where I mentioned the partnership between Angel City and Jameson Whiskey resulting in the delicious Imperial Red Ale. After that success the red ale barrels were sent back to Ireland and a batch of whiskey was then aged in them. Last month brought the debut of the Jameson Angel City Caskmates collaboration and I was lucky enough to get one of the first tastes.

After a 6 month aging period the result is a whiskey unlike any other I’ve had. There are hints of toffee, tobacco and vanilla with a good dose of heat on the finish. It’s uniquely delicious and a true LA treasure.

Angel City also has two new beers, in addition to the Caskmates whiskey and I was lucky enough to be sent a sample of each.

Citrus Wheat Ale is a year round beer that will be sold all over California. It’s a golden, tart ale made with mandarins, tangerines and limes that’s sure to be hit for Spring and Summer. It was recommended to pair it with some Cuties but I decided to go a step further and add them to my glass of beer. The result was a sweet tart delight that was the perfect accompaniment to my dinner.

On the limited edition side Angel City released the Rauchbier – a smoked lager. I took one sip and, wow, I could sure taste the smoke. It was actually a bit too much for me but I shared it with my dad and he loved it. He generally drinks German beer and he said this was the first micro-brewed beer he liked.

Oggi’s Sports | Brewhouse | Pizza is a San Diego based brewery  and I was sent a sample of their latest release, Roasted Peanut Stout. Now, I love a good stout but I must admit I had my doubts about this one and thought it might taste like peanut butter. It doesn’t. It’s a delicious, full-bodied stout that has a nice hint of sweetness. I absolutely loved it.

So far, 2017 has debuted some pretty delicious brews. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
