Catching a Show at the Valley Performing Arts Center

Recently I headed to Northridge to catch a show by the wonderful John Pizzarelli at the Valley Performing Arts Center (full disclosure: I received complimentary tickets). I had never been there before and had no idea what to expect other than its location on the campus of Cal State Northridge. Imagine my surprise when I came across this beautiful structure. Opened about three years ago it’s fast becoming a premier venue for entertainment. Previous to my visit the jazz great Diana Krall performed there.

Parking is available onsite for a nominal fee. It’s a bit of a walk but there’s a shuttle available for those who need it. I decided to hoof and it was glad I did for I came across these fabulous mosaics.

These are but three of an entire series of musicians. I know nothing of their provenance but think they’re just wonderful.

Once inside the center I found myself in awe of it’s deliciously modern design. Soaring ceilings, scads of windows, and a muted color palate impressed me to no end. I was also excited to discover a hidden treasure – the Bistro on the Terrace.

Nestled at the back of the balcony level is a small terrace cafe offering food, drink, and a lovely view.

Such a fabulous idea. It was so nice to sit out there and enjoy a drink prior to the performance. I could have spent much longer enjoying the fresh air but soon the bells started to chime indicating 15 minutes to show time. This offered me just enough time to duck into the gallery on the loge level. Yes, in addition to an outdoor cafe there’s also an art gallery in the performing arts center.

It’s a great place to stop before the performance for a little visual culture. The exhibits rotate so you never know what you may find there.

After viewing the art I headed to my seat and settled in for an evening of Nat King Cole favorites. The venue seats 1700 yet offers an intimate space for performance. The acoustics are wonderful and the sounds of John Pizzarelli and Ramsey Lewis kept me dancing in my seat. Such a memorable evening.

Awww…you were in my neck of the woods! Isn’t it a fantastic venue?! It’s like a jewel for the Valley. I went there last year to watch a performance with my daughter’s school. Love the intimate setting!
