Dining at Musashiya Udon

Every time I travel through Westwood I feel a bit overwhelmed. There are so many places to eat from quick service spots to restaurants to dessert shops that I don’t know what to choose. I’m not in the area too often so I want to be sure find a good spot! Recently, I found just that when I was invited to try out Musashiya Udon.

Udon is a traditional Japanese noodle dish that has existed for over 1000 years. Musashiya’s menu is dedicated to this staple and they take it very seriously. Everything’s made in house including the noodles.

The Udon comes in a range of flavors from traditional to innovative. On my visit I was able to sample a variety of the dishes.

Niku Tsuke. Organic Salad. Curry. Carbonara. Mentai Ankake Tamagotoji. All were incredibly flavorful in their own right. I especially enjoyed the traditional Niku Tsuke. The delicious beef broth combined with the melt-in-your-mouth noodles made for the ultimate comfort food. The Organic Salad was served chilled with a dressing instead of a broth and was refreshing treat. And the Curry was so full of flavor that if I had more stomach room I could have eaten the whole bowl.

In addition to the Udon Musashiya offers several other varieties of dishes. There’s a range of sides including a delicious Dried Soft Squid Tempura.

Squid jerky that’s deep fried is not something I would normally be inclined to order. But it was fantastic. Speaking of tempura…

Musashiya offers a range of items available from the typical pumpkin and shrimp to the unusual soft boiled egg and oba leaf. The tempura batter is light and flavorful and barely greasy. I tried a sampling of the items and am now a convert to the tempura soft boiled egg. What a delight!

New on the menu is a variety of Onigiri.

From pickled kelp to roasted pork to miso beef there are wide range of flavors offered. The onigiri is huge and almost a meal in itself. I was particularly partial to the miso beef – so tasty!

Musashiya Udon introduced me to whole new world of Japanese cuisine. I absolutely love it and can’t wait to visit again.
