Enjoying a Holiday Meal at North Woods Inn

It’s no secret I love a landmark restaurant. If it’s existed over 50 years, looks like a time capsule and serves food rarely served anymore I’m there. Miceli’s, Tam O’Shanter, The Apple Pan, Dupar’s….I love ’em all. Once of the establishments long on my list to visit was North Woods Inn. With its signature log cabin exterior and perpetually snowy roof it called to me and what better time to visit than at Christmas time? So, on a recent overcast Sunday my family bundled up and headed there for a hearty meal.

There are three North Woods Inn locations in San Gabriel, Covina and La Mirada. We opted to visit the La Mirada one located just off the 5 freeway in a mostly industrial area. Nowadays the log cabin seems a bit out of place but that certainly doesn’t deter customers. We arrived just after opening and found joined several other patrons eager for a weekend meal.

The restaurant was fully decorated for Christmas and classic carols filled the air.

North Woods Inn is aptly named as the decor does invoke a cabin located in some far off forest. Take away the Christmas decorations and winter remains thanks to the dark wood and themed stained glass. Speaking of stained glass, the restaurant is filled with the most beautiful windows and I couldn’t help but look around.

When it comes to the menu North Woods Inn is strictly old school with hearty meals meant to put meat on your bones (and in your stomach!). I opted for the Prime Rib Dip while the rest of the family ordered the Steak Sandwich (which really isn’t a sandwich at all).

It certainly isn’t diet food with lots of cream, butter and other caloric goodness. While a fun throwback I wouldn’t call it gourmet fare. I can’t wait to go back but it’s not because of the menu.

North Woods Inn is a fantastic time capsule from its decor to its food. It’s the perfect place to visit at the holidays but that shouldn’t stop you from going any time of year. They don’t make places like these any more and the ones that remain deserve to be treasured. So go to North Woods Inn and you’ll find a place that’s truly special.
