Having Lunch at The Apple Pan
It’s no secret that I love a good restaurant. I sure write about them enough. But there is one kind of restaurant that I prize above all others – the landmark restaurant. You know the kind…in business forever, revered throughout the area, serving up dishes just like the day it opened. One of my absolute favorite LA landmark eateries is The Apple Pan.
In business since 1947 The Apple Pan looks just as it did when it opened (or so I assume as I didn’t happen to be there).
Inside you’ll find a simple U-shaped counter with a griddle in the middle. Seating is first come first served. There’s no waiting list so if the bar is full just wait along the wall until something opens up. There are no VIP’s here.
The waiters are true pr’s. They take your order, serve your food and drink, and clear your setting quicker than a blink of the eye. Don’t look for someone to gab with here. You’re in and you’re out – there’s people waiting for your seat!
The menu is only one page long – a handful of burgers and sandwiches, a few sides, a few drinks, and delicious, delicious pie. And be sure to order a soda. Even if you’re not so into it. Where else are you going to get cups like the ones above? Not anywhere else this side of 1960.
And get fries. The fries are so good! Fresh from the fryer, soft and fluffy, served with an endless supply of ketchup. As you can see the serving is huge – definitely for sharing.
As for the burger…there’s two kinds – Steakburger and Hickoryburger. I always go with the hickory as it comes topped with a hickory smoked bbq sauce.
And if you have room – get the pie! It’s so so good. Unfortunately, on this particular trip I just couldn’t fit it in.
Oh, and don’t forget to bring cash. The Apple Pan accepts nothing else. After all, it is 1947 inside.

this place is a real throwback. once you go you will want to go back again and again. it is truly an experience.

I love those old-school classic diners! We recently went to one and were glad that we remembered to bring cash just in time! It’s getting a little unusual these days to find a place that doesn’t take credit cards!

I think I have driven by this place. I love pies and I bet theirs is really good. Nice to know it is a historic site. Will have to check it out sometime.
Their pies are delicious! Definitely stop by the next time you’re in the area.
Looks great! In my hometown, we have a little diner on ‘the square’ (downtown) that brings a similar nostalgia. Food is always delicious…and the pies are known throughout the county.
