Sampling Angel City Double IPA

It’s no secret that I love Angel City Brewery. With their historic public house, their cheerful customer service and their cozy atmosphere it’s one of my favorite spots downtown. And the beer ain’t so bad, either.

Every quarter, Angel City releases a limited edition beer that’s just a bit more unique than their year round varieties. Past limited editions have included Srirachelada, Berliner Weisse and Belligerent Bloke. This go r0und I was lucky enough to be sent their latest beer to try – Double IPA.

Upon opening the 22oz bottle I was immediately hit with a tropical scent. I poured the India Pale Ale into a glass and it was a beautiful burnt orange color with a nice head of foam.

I took a sip and was immediately hit with a tropical flavor and a dose of bitterness. I racked my brain to think what the tropical flavor could be. Orange? Mango? Then, I looked at the Angel City description and it described sweet papaya aromas. That’s it! Papaya!

Double IPA’s can be bitter which is often the reason I don’t generally order them. I must admit Angel City Double IPA has a good dose of bitterness to it. Luckily, it also has that sweet tropical flavor to balance it out.

You can find Angel City Double IPA on tap at the public house or in 22oz bottles in select stores. If you do decide to head to the public house why not go on February 14 for their anti-Valentine’s Day Broken Heart Circus. There will be live music, circus acts, food trucks and, of course, beer!
