Taking a Class at Krav Maga Worldwide

Awhile back I mentioned a increased focus on wellness on this blog. Because of that my goal has been to take any and all fitness offer that I get. Whether or not I stuck to that goal can be debated (I’m not ready for a mud run! Not yet!). But when I got an offer to check out a class at Krav Maga Worldwide, I jumped at the chance.

You see, I’d been wanting to take Krav Maga forever. Ok, maybe not forever…but at least ever since I saw this episode of Happy Endings.

I made my way over to Krav Maga Worldwide in West LA and took a level 1 class. I was really nervous. I’m in pretty good shape but I don’t exactly have an athlete’s physique. I’m also pretty uncoordinated. Luckily, I was assisted by the lovely Kat who assured me everything would be fine. And, of course, she was right.

Basically, each level 1 class focuses on a specific body part. As you start to take the class regularly you’ll rotate through all the areas used in the self defense method. On my visit we focused on the arms and learned various defense moves for about an hour. I loved it! The instructor was super nice and made sure that everyone was learning properly. It was easy to understand and I took to it quite well. I left the class feeling super pumped and imagining myself earning various colored belts in the future.

I was invited back to take an additional class and this time chose Krav Maga Bag – a fitness class that combines Krav Maga and kickboxing moves.

Obviously, that’s not me in the photo but it’s a good example of how the class goes.

The class is, in one word, intense. Make that INTENSE. We started the class with jogging around the room and jumping jacks and I immediately thought I was in over my head. But you know what? I wasn’t. I held my own the entire time. We boxed and we kicked and we lifted weights and we stretched and we boxed and kicked and boxed and kicked….

I must admit I watched the clock a bit and was super worn out when it was over but I LOVED IT. Seriously, it made me feel so good. Not only did I have a natural high from all those endorphins but I really felt like I accomplished something AND like I could do anything from then on.

I can’t wait to take another Krav Maga class. And then after that maybe I’ll take up Jazz Kwon Do.
