Visiting Calico Ghost Town

You know how there are some places that you always mean to go but somehow never do? Calico Ghost Town was one of those places for me. I would always see the sign for it when traveling to Vegas but never stopped. Until this trip.

Calico Ghost Town

Though it may seem like a tourist attraction, Calico Ghost Town is an honest to goodness former town. It was formed in the late 1800’s and is centered around Maggie’s Mine. You see, there was silver in them thar hills and a hardy group of individuals decided to mine it. But in the 1890’s the price of silver went down and the town was all but abandoned.

In the 1950’s the town was purchased by Walter Knott (of Knott’s Berry Farm) and was restored and turned into a tourist attraction. So if you visit and it reminds you of Ghost Town at Knott’s that’s no coincidence.

At the time of our visit, it was HOT, HOT, HOT but that didn’t stop us from exploring the town. There’s actually quite a bit to see and do.

We even made sure to stop by Maggie Mine to see the reason for the town’s existence.
After all these years, I’m glad I finally made it to Calico Ghost Town. It really is a Southern California treasure. It’s a fun place to visit and you learn a lot about local history, too. Oh, and the views are spectacular.
