Visiting the Hollywood Bowl Museum

Recently I made my summer trek to the Hollywood Bowl to see Pink Martini in concert.

Now there’s not much point in writing a post about my visit because it’s such an institution that I’d just be preaching to the choir. It would be like recommending a trip to Radio City Music Hall if this blog were called New York Explorer.

So instead, I’ll tell you about a special place at the bowl that is often overlooked by concert goers – the Hollywood Bowl Museum. Did you know there is a museum at the bowl? Did you know it’s free? Did you know it’s open before every concert?

Yup. All of the above is true. And so is the fact that it’s definitely worth a visit.

Downstairs you’ll find interactive exhibits covering the history of the bowl. Lots of archived recordings to listen to and an awesome collection of vintage programs.

Upstairs you’ll find a brand new exhibit called “Live From the Bowl – Recordings and Broadcasts from the Bowl 1928-2012.” Now this exhibit is wonderful! In it you’ll find mock ups of rooms throughout the ages showing how folks have listened to Bowl broadcasts throughout history.

I would like to live in all of these places. But since they’re not real (alas!) I’ll just have to stop by for a visit the next time I’m headed to the Bowl.
