Somethings I’ve loved as a kid I’ve long moved on from (Micro Machines and English Toast Pizza I hardly knew ya) but somethings I love to this day. Like animated films. Ever since my first viewing of Snow White as a toddler I’ve enjoyed them. Whether hand drawn, computer generated or stop motion I find them fascinating. Especially stop motion. I’m continually in awe of all the hard work that goes into making the detailed masterpieces. So when I was invited to visit Universal Studios and view the exhibition From Coraline to Kubo: A Magical LAIKA Experience I could not wait to see it.
LAIKA is a relatively new animation studio currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. In that short decade it’s been responsible for some of the most innovative animated films including Coraline, The Boxtrolls and the recent release, Kubo and the Two Strings. I must admit Coraline is the only film I’ve seen so far but I was incredibly awed by its artistry and, after viewing the exhibit, am eager to watch the others.
Located in the Globe Theatre at Universal Studios the exhibit is open to all park visitors. Nestled right next to Minion Mayhem it’s the perfect place to visit after a zany ride with the little yellow guys.
Upon entering the theatre you’re led on a guided tour of LAIKA’s extensive works. Each film has it’s own area filled with authentic props from the production. On hand are expert guides happy to share with you information on the fascinating pieces. Wandering through I was awed by the incredible details that go into each LAIKA film from the figurines from Coraline
to the miniature house from Paranorman complete with working lights and television
to the 5 foot puppet from The Boxtrolls (at the time the largest stop motion figure).
An extensive part of the exhibit is devoted to Kubo and the Two Strings as it’s the studio’s latest release and after viewing the incredible set pieces I can’t wait to see the film.
From Coraline to Kubo: A Magical LAIKA Experience runs from now until January 15 and is an exhibition well worth seeing. After the stress of the holidays what better way to wind down than a fun day at Universal Studios with Harry Potter, the Minions and LAIKA.
