An Outlet Mall Like No Other – A Visit To the Citadel Outlets

Now, I’m not much of an outlet shopper. I don’t think the deals are that great and I don’t care for the massive crowds and the impossible parking. Generally, I only go if I have a particular purpose in mind or need to make a bathroom stop on a road trip (I’m not really selling this post, am I?). BUT, there is one outlet mall that’s worth a visit. And it’s not for the stores. And it’s not for the fact that it’s the only outlet mall in Los Angeles. It’s because it happens to be located in a historic property that, thanks to the mall, has been wonderfully preserved. So where am I talking about? Well, if you’ve driven on the 5 freeway near Los Angeles you’ve probably seen these surprisingly numerous somewhat garish signs that advertise the Citadel Outlets.

As you can see there’s a sphinx on the top. This is a homage to the building itself – the Egyptian Assyrian themed former Samson Tire and Rubber Company factory. The plant was built in 1930 and modeled after the Assyrian Palace of King Sargon II. It became known as The Citadel that same year. After 48 years of operation it was closed in 1978. Twelve years later it reopened as the Citadel Outlets which it has remained to this day. Pretty interesting, huh?

I must admit that, until this past weekend, I had never looked closely at the structure itself. But for the sake of this blog I took a little stroll down Atlantic Blvd. to snap some pics. And I’m sure glad I did because it’s truly a sight!

Isn’t it incredible! And I also discovered this:

Luckily those doors were open and I found myself in an interesting lobby – maybe it was the original lobby of the plant?

Pretty nifty!

I’m so glad I took the time to really look around instead of rushing to my destination. It’s amazing what treasures you find in the most unlikely places!
