Mad About Mid-Century Modern – Viewing California Design at LACMA

Why hello there! Long time no see. I know it’s totally my fault. I have the legit excuse of getting sick then the not so legit excuse of getting burnt out. I know, I know I’ve only been blogging for a few months…but I’m back baby and better than ever! Well, I guess that remains to be seen, but you catch my drift. Anyhoo…ya know what got me back into the ole bloggin’? The awesomely retro California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way” (what a mouthful!) exhibit currently on display at LACMA.

To know anything about me is to know that the word retro is practically my middle name. I reminisce for an age I never lived through and would love to catch a lift with Doc Brown and see first hand “the good old days.” But, since that’s not gonna happen anytime soon I fuel my fantasy through exhibits such as California Design.

Now California Design is actually part of the much larger Pacific Standard Time. This is an all encompassing retrospective in which over 60 cultural institutions are celebrating the beginnings of the Los Angeles art scene. These exhibits cover the who gamut – architecture, painting, photography, performance art…you name it, there’s an exhibit. Since I’m not such a fan of modern art, most of them don’t really appeal to me. To each his own. But I do love me some mid-century modern design, so California Design was right up my alley.

Lucky for me, LACMA was offering free admission yesterday. Objects of my desire on view for not even a single clam???? I am so there!

Anticipating a crowd,I arrived when the exhibit opened in order to ensure prime viewing of the pieces. Turned out to be a good idea, I was able to see everything with ease. And boy oh boy, was it awesome. From fashion to furniture to toys to textiles to automobiles to architecture, I saw it all and loved every minute of it. It was ahmahzing. So, rather that ramble on an on I’m just going to let the items speak for themselves. Enjoy the gallery and then get thee to the exhibit!
