History in the Harbor – A Visit to the S.S. Lane Victory
So a lot of buzz lately has been floating around the USS Iowa, a battleship that recently docked in San Pedro. See, the USS Iowa is now open as a museum and the crowds are flocking to it. I looked into visiting and found out the admission price is $18. $18! Um, that doesn’t exactly fit into my budget. So, instead I decided to visit the lesser known but equally interesting S.S. Lane Victory, a retired Merchant Marine ship that’s also docked in San Pedro. Their admission is only $5. Now that, my friends, is bargain friendly!
When we got to the ship we walked up the gangplank and paid our 5 smackers each. We were then told we could explore the ship at our leisure, going anywhere we wanted. The only restrictions were a few places that were cordoned off. So we were essentially given free reign to do whatever we wanted. What museum allows that! Love it, love it, love it.
We then proceeded to spend the next hour or so exploring the ship from top to bottom. It didn’t look that big when we approached it, but looks can be deceiving. It’s huge! There was so much to see. So instead of describing it to you, I’m just going to inundate you with pictures.
Why is this building in disrepair? Somebody save it! |
One thing I learned in my exploring – a sailor’s life is not for me. Just give me dry land, a queen sized bed, and a private bathroom and I’m happy. But if you are inclined towards the sea, the S.S. Lane Victory does offer cruises. They, unfortunately, are not only $5.
So, if you’re like me and $18 is too much to pay check out the S.S. Lane Victory. Or if $18 is no problem, still check out the S.S. Lane Victory. It’s one fascinating piece of history.
