Made With Heart – Shopping at Made by DWC

Now, I generally wouldn’t recommend making a trek through skid row just to get a coffee, but today I am going to do just that. In fact, I highly recommend visiting Made by DWC which happens to be located in the least tourist friendly part of town.

Made is part coffee house party gift shop located on the ground floor of the Downtown Women’s Center in the heart of Los Angeles. It was recently opened and is not you standard latte stop. Not only do all the proceeds go directly to the Downtown Women’s Center but the shop also acts as an education program for the women of the center and surrounding area. The main goal of the shop is…well I’m just going to let them tell you.

“Made by DWC was created to help break the cycle of poverty and chronic underemployment by helping women discover their talents and develop their skills by offering job readiness training and product development opportunities.”
When I read that, I knew I had to stop by. Last week, I did just that and was not disappointed. Despite the rough neighborhood, the Downtown Women’s Center is a gem of a building complete with it’s own parking lot. As lovely as the building was, I was especially excited about the parking, totally free in the heart of LA, now that is something special. But I digress…
Inside the shop is a large space filled with lots of cute gift items which I only glanced over as I knew my wallet wouldn’t allow me to purchase anything. The coffee bar has a large selection of drinks and as it was a hot day, I chose a nice freshly brewed iced tea. I knew I was low on funds, but in looking at the display case I found a treat I just had to try. Behold the S’mookie (and my iced tea).

Yup, it’s the passenger seat, pretty good improvising, huh?
Yes, as a matter of fact, it was delicious. Now this delightful combo set me back a mere $4.32 (including tax). You may think that’s not such a great deal, but think about it. When you spend a similar amount at Starbucks you’re getting mass produced items and your money is only making the Man richer (yeah, I said the Man, I don’t regret it). When you make a purchase from Made you’re buying a handmade item and all the proceeds go to a worthy cause. To me, that is the better deal.
Plus, did I mention the service. Super, super nice and friendly. Gotta love that.
So, head on down to Made by DWC and support a worthy cause simply by buying yourself a delicious treat.
