Second Home Serpentine Pavilion Now Open at La Brea Tar Pits
When I think of summer I think of sunshine and the outdoors and bright colors and fun outings. Luckily, in Southern California these are in endless supply and sometimes you can even enjoy them all at once. Recently, I did just that when I headed to the Second Home Serpentine Pavilion at La Brea Tar Pits.
While we may have ample sunshine in Los Angeles in London…not so much. So when summer comes they embrace it with the annual Serpentine Pavilion in Hyde Park. Each year Serpentine Galleries enlist a different artist to create an innovative, temporary entertainment pavilion in which Londoners can enjoy the rare summer weather.
In 2015 the Madrid based design duo selgascano was enlisted to create that year’s Serpentine Pavilion and came up with a bold, colorful design that was sure to brighten up any gray day. Now, that same pavilion has been transported to the La Brea Tar Pits to spend the summer entertaining Angelenos.
This is the first time any Serpentine Pavilion has been presented outside of London and it’s fitting that such a unique structure should spend the summer adjacent to one of LA’s most unique spots – the La Brea Tar Pits.
Open through November 24, 2019 the pavilion can be explored both inside and out and will play host to an array of public programs. There will be lectures, screenings, performances and more. Some of the events coming up include a screening of Our Planet, a discussion on meditation with David Lynch and a performance from the rapper Octavian. You can learn more about upcoming events here.
And if you just want to look around the pavilion it’s open daily from 11am-7pm (9pm on Fridays) and admission is free. Recently I did just that and it’s a fun structure to explore. With colorful twists and turns it’s straight out of a child’s fantasy.
You may be wondering why it’s called Second Home Serpentine Pavilion. Second Home is a British based workspace that’s about to make it’s American debut. Later this year the first stateside Second Home will open in Hollywood.
So if you’re headed to the tar pits or just want to check out something fun and unusual head to Second Home Serpentine Pavilion. I guarantee you’ve never seen anything like it before.
