Spotlight on Black Hill Press
I’m super excited about this local spotlight subject because it has to do with one of my favorite hobbies – reading. Black Hill Press is a Southern California based publishing house that specializes in an often overlooked art form, the novella.
Black Hill Press doesn’t only focus on novellas but on Contemporary American ones. Each author is a current writer, often up and coming. And not only does each book celebrate a unique voice but it also features a unique artist contributing to the cover art. Recently, I was sent a few review copies so I could check out these exciting new stories.
I received Sing For Life: Tin Pan Alley by Douglas Cowie, Begin by Kevin Staniec, and Another Name for Autumn by Corrie Greathouse. The books are around 100 pages each and the subject matter couldn’t be more different. Sing for Life is about a troubadour having an unusual time in New York City. Begin is about a chance encounter at a coffee shop and Another Name for Autumn is about a lonely soul reliving the past.
Each book is an easy read yet totally engrossing. I took each one to the gym to read while working out and was so caught up in the story that I ended up extending my workout just so I could finish it! They’re the perfect companion pieces for traveling, lunch hours, or anytime one wants to take a quick reading break. And this time of year they make great stocking stuffers!
