Spotlight on Matt’s Munchies
It’s obvious from this blog that I’ve got an incurable sweet tooth. Because of this, I’ve got to eat healthy when I’m not doing “research.” So, I’m always looking for a good tasting, healthy snack to keep me sated (stole that word from Martha).
Earlier this year when I was wandering the halls of Expo West I came across Matt’s Munchies, a snack brand based in my hometown of Santa Ana, CA. My interest was sparked so the good folks behind the brand sent me a variety back of flavors to try. Look at this bounty!
It was like manna from heaven! These snack made their way into two weeks of lunches and I was sad when I finished the last package. That’s not to say that I loved every flavor. There were a couple that weren’t my thing but most of them I absolutely loved. Like this guy:
Island Mango – mango fruit snack topped with toasted coconut. I’ve never seen anything like this before and I’ve eaten A LOT of fruit leather. The taste is amazing – slightly tart mango topped with sweet crunchy coconut. Mmm, mmm, mmm.
In fact, I loved all the mango flavors (including mango and mango acai). They just taste so fresh! Most fruit snacks are too sweet. Not Matt’s Munchies. There’s no added sugar and they taste as close to fresh fruit as you could possibly get.
But if you’re more in the mood for dessert…
guilt free Choco-Nana! These babies were only 80 calories for the whole package. Gotta love that.
I love the way the product is packaged too. The little squares are the perfect bite size pieces – no more sticky fingers. And it’s a nice amount, too. If I can remember correctly there’s 16 squares per package. Of course, for the Island Mango that’s nowhere near enough!
Another thing I love is that Matt’s Munchies is a family business. The snacks were developed by Chef Robert and named after his son, Matt, who helped create the flavors. Robert’s wife and sons also work for the company.
You can find Matt’s Muchies in several local markets including Whole Foods and Mother’s Market. Or you can always order online.
full disclosure: I received a package of Matt’s Munchies to review. All opinions are my own.
