Cirque du Soleil’s OVO Opens at Microsoft Theater
During the pandemic one of the things I missed most was live performance. I’ve always enjoyed spending the evening watching a film, concert or production and I found myself longing to be back in a theater. Happily, lives shows have returned and I finally was able to attend one when I was invited to see Cirque du Soleil’s OVO.
OVO marks Cirque du Soleil’s return to Los Angeles and can currently be seen at the Microsoft Theater through May 1, 2022. The colorful, energetic production brings viewers into the delightful world of bugs. It’s not often that delightful is used to describe a bug but leave it to Cirque du Soleil to prove just that.
As with all Cirque du Soleil productions the plot is secondary to the acts performed and I’d be hard pressed to tell you exactly what it is. Something about a fly (I think?) transporting an egg but then losing it to a gang of rival creepy crawlies while falling in love with a lady bug or maybe or…who knows? And who cares when there’s acrobats, tumblers, contortionists, jugglers and more completing amazing feats right in front of you.
And what feats! It blows my mind what the human body is capable of. Here I am just trying to hold a plank for 30 seconds while the Cirque du Soleil performers are accomplishing all sorts of rare feats. In OVO I saw tumblers walking up a wall and propelling themselves off it like it was a day in the park. I saw a contortionist twist his body into so many shapes that I couldn’t tell which end was up. Then there was the acrobatic duo that lifted each other with ease while flying through the air on a t bit of rope. Simply incredible.
Pair that action with a soulful samba beat and it makes for such a fun night out. I spent two plus hours tapping my toes, smiling with glee and clapping my hands like there was no tomorrow. Thanks to Cirque du Soleil my return to the theater has started with a bang. OVO runs through May 1, 2022 and is the perfect way to celebrate our collective return to life.
