Enjoying Dessert at Ramekin

Recently I was invited to attend a media tasting at Ramekin – a dessert cafe in the lovely area of Los Feliz. Now you know me and dessert so, of course, I went. And I took my #1 sister and fellow dessert lover, Shannon.
Ramekin takes the same approach to dessert as a restaurant does to entrees. Courses (if you choose), fresh ingredients, and items made to order. When we arrived we had a selection of choices for our first course – ice cream.
 Whoah Nelly! What to order?

I opted for Early Grey and Shannon went for Plum.

Both were absolutely delicious. With all the ice creams made in-house, how could they not be?
After our apertif we sat back, relaxed, and were treated to a parade of made to order treats.
Strawberry Brick Toast – this was my favorite selection. The “toast” was a subtly sweet pound cake topped with chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries. Oh, and underneath was a generous scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Next came the chocolate bread pudding. Ordinarily, I’m not a fan of bread pudding – too smushy and slimey for my taste. Not this. The chef intentionally deconstructed the notion of bread pudding. Instead of soft and mushy it’s firm and crunchy. A vast improvement! Now this is one bread pudding I would have again (and again and again…).
Then came the blueberry soup. To that I thought, “blueberry soup? I don’t know…” I shouldn’t have been so skeptical. It was so, so yummy. Light, tart, sweet…an amazing combo. It comes with a dish of homemade granola, a scoop of creme fraiche ice cream, and five delectable meringues. Mm, mm, mm.

We finished up the evening with a berry cobbler. Like the bread pudding, this was a dish deconstructed. A solid cake-like top replaced the typical crumbles. Again, a great move from the chef.

Overall, I’m loving this dinner like approach to dessert. I’m excited to go back and have another multi-course dessert.
