Experience Solange’s Bridge-s This Weekend at the Getty

I first visited the Getty soon after its opening in 1997 and have made countless return trips ever since. You may wonder why I return to the same place over and over but the answer is simple. The Getty is always changing. It’s always innovating; it’s always experimenting and every visit brings something new. On Monday I returned to preview a special performance that’s happening this weekend only (November 16 & 17, 2019) – Solange’s Bridge-s.

Solange is Solange Knowles, the Grammy winning recording artist, and Bridge-s is a multi-disciplinary performance that she curated especially for the Getty. Featuring live musicians and a brand new modern dance piece choreographed by Gerard & Kelly it explores the Getty Center in a brand new way.

Heading to the Getty on Monday night I had no idea what to expect. For me, performance art can be hit or miss (mostly miss) so I wasn’t sure if I’d even like what was presented. it turns out I thoroughly enjoyed it. A troupe of modern dancers accompanied by an orchestra led by noted composer and jazz pianist Cooper-Moore overtook various parts of the Getty campus surrounding the audience with movement and sound. Each new location was a surprise and, as the sun set, it was a thoroughly exhilarating experience to be completely surrounded by music and dance.

This weekend Bridge-s will be performance throughout the Getty Center from 11am-5pm. In addition, there will be film screenings and a lecture with British-Ghanaian philosopher, Kodwo Eshun. There’s no extra fee to experience the performance, screenings or lecture and you can choose just how much you want to immerse yourself in Bridge-s as you spend your day at the Getty.
