Judson Studios Exhibit Now on View at Forest Lawn
I never thought I would write this but one of my favorite LA area places to visit is Forest Lawn. Yup, I’m talking about the giant cemetery in Glendale. What can I say? Tucked within the grounds is one of my favorite museums…and that’s not just because it offers free admission. In the past few years Forest Lawn Museum has presented a range of uniquely entertaining exhibits from the artwork of Disney legend Eyvind Earle to portraits of David Bowie in Mexico to fascinating images of Los Angeles from the air and I’ve enjoyed every one of them. So when museums began to open up after the pandemic I headed straight there to view Judson Studios: Stained Glass From Gothic to Street Style.
Judson Studios is a stained glass manufacturer that has been based in Los Angeles since 1897. Two years ago I was lucky enough to tour their historic headquarters and it was an amazing experience. Not only does the studio create stained glassed windows for churches, businesses and residences but it also restores historic stained glass and works with contemporary artists on current projects. It’s a fascinating, family run business that produces beautiful works of art.
Yet, in its entire existence there has never been an exhibition devoted to its output…until now. Forest Lawn and Judson Studios have joined forces to present nearly 100 artifacts spanning the history of the studio from the 1800’s to the present in the exhibition Judson Studios: Stained Glass From Gothic to Street Style.
in addition to works from Judson Studios the exhibit also showcases centuries old stain glass from the Forest Lawn collection. Formerly displayed in the Gothic churches of Europe the pieces have been beautifully preserved and are now presented at eye level so the viewer can clearly see their beautiful handiwork.
Speaking of handiwork, the Judson Studios pieces are equally beautiful. The studio only hires the most skilled artisans and their artistic perfection shines through in the works on display.
Judson Studios: Stained Glass From Gothic to Street Style is a comprehensive look at the works of the historic manufacturer. The pieces are beautifully presented and allow the viewer a close up view of true artistic achievement. The exhibition runs until September 12 and proves Forest Lawn Museum is a must visit area institution. Don’t miss it.
