Reading Brokenomics
Way back when I started this blog I envisioned it as a site for budgetary tips. I thought I would share my wisdom on saving money in the city. Soon I learned there were plenty of other blogs doing a good job of it and…well…sometimes I didn’t feel like saving money. So my blog soon transitioned into what you see today.
Now, that doesn’t mean that I don’t like to save money. Quite the contrary. I still am a frugal person and am constantly on the lookout for a good bargain. Problem is, it’s hard to do it in SoCal. This area can be summed up in one word – expensive. Recently, I was given a book that aims to help those with this very same problem. Brokenomics by Dina Gachman, a local resident, is a fun guide for anyone trying to trim a little fat off their budget.
Brokenomics is broken into various sections such as Education, Work and Travel and Leisure and there are 50 simple tips for any area of life. What I love about this book is that it’s not just filled with platitudes – there’s honest to goodness real word advice. There’s tips on negotiating (a weakness of mine) , how to enjoy arts and culture on the cheap and practical advice on how to deal with student loans. Plus, there’s a good dose of humor sprinkled throughout. Ms. Gachman doesn’t come across as some lofty expert who makes you embarrassed about the financial decisions you’ve made. Instead, she comes across as a good friend who’s been through it all and is sharing her real life experience with you.
It’s a fun read and a good tool to have on hand when you’re facing real life situations such as getting a roommate, splurging on an expensive treat and applying for student loans. As for me, it came at just the right time. I admit, lately I’ve slipped a bit in the budget department. Reading Brokenomics brought me back to reality and I’m back to saving. For that I’m super grateful.
I am picking this up ASAP!
