Touring the Newly Expanded Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library
Thank goodness for the great outdoors! I don’t know what I’d have done these past few months if I couldn’t have gone outside and strolled around. Now, as an added bonus, most local botanical gardens have re-opened to the public including one of my favorites The Huntington and recently, I headed there to explore the newly expanded Chinese Garden.
The Chinese (and neighboring Japanese Garden) has long been my favorite outdoor space at the Huntington and I was excited to check out the expansion. Initially 3.5 acres Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, has now been expanded to 15 acres and features several new, exciting features including the following.
The Stargazing Tower is located on the highest point of the garden and features stunning views of the Huntington’s grounds as well as the San Gabriel Mountains beyond.
The Verdant Microcosm is a meandering pathway that features a display of penjing (similar to Japanese Bonsai).
The Courtyard of Assembled Worthies features beautiful pebble mosaics and links several new structures that will open at a later. It will also be the site of future performances and programming. Speaking of pebble mosaics they’re featured throughout the garden and are true works of art. As I wandered around I couldn’t help but look down and admire the craftsmanship displayed under my feet.
And when I wasn’t looking down I was looking to the left and to the right and up and all around me at the beautiful landscape that surrounded me.
Not only is the garden beautiful but it also exudes peace and tranquility and features several quiet spots that are perfect for reflection.
Liu Fang Yuan, the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, is a garden over 20 years in the making and its exquisite workmanship and attention to detail is visible in every nook and cranny. The Huntington Library is now home to one of the world’s largest classical-style Chinese gardens and it’s truly a place one can while away the hours and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
