Visiting B&K Sugar Arts Lab
“Oh Los Angeles, you magical treasure box of a town (I can’t help but channel my inner Leslie Knope since I just watched the series finale of Parks and Rec. Sigh. I’ll miss it). ”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve discovered something new during those endless hours spent in my car. Whether on a side street or a main thoroughfare I’ve often spotted something that’s made me make a bold traffic move so that I could pull over and check it out further. Hidden gems. The city’s got them in spades!
Take B&K Sugar Arts Lab. Nestled on quiet section of Robertson it’s a blink and you’ll miss it spot. But don’t blink and don’t miss it because it’s a pretty special place as it houses not one, not two but three artisan sweet makers.
Recently, I stopped by and met the lovely folks behind the brands. They were so kind and their desserts were so beautiful and delicious!
Bonhoff & Kent specializes in elaborate dessert sculptures. Isn’t the piece above so beautiful? And it’s entirely edible! The exterior is chocolate and the interior is filled with cake and ganache.
I was lucky enough to to meet the one of the founders, Cory. She previously worked as a cake decorator specializing in chocolate. With her partner, Olivia, she founded Bonhoff & Kent to take her chocolate creations to the next level. And she certainly did! These are works of art that I’d almost hate to eat. Almost.
Mollie B’s specializes in cakes, pies, and cookies. I spoke to Sue, the affable founder and baker who advised she found her inspiration through her family. Her grandmother, Mollie, was quite a baker and she instilled that passion in Sue. Now she takes family recipes adds her own twist and produces delectable treats. She’s also happy to adapt the family recipes of her customers. I was so excited to have her try to recreate my grandma’s peanut butter fudge until I found out she never wrote the recipe down!
The Department of Sweet Diversions creates varied and unique flavors of jam. Inspiration came from a grandmother who was an amazing jam maker. Her granddaughter, under the pseudonym Agent Copperpot, creates handmade batches that are delicious.
All fruits are locally sourced and handpicked in order to create the perfect taste. As such, the jams vary with the season. I was lucky enough to try a delicious Orange infused with Rosemary. Wow! As a person who avoids citrus jams I was blown away by the fantastic flavor.
B&K Sugar Arts Lab is the perfect spot to pick up a gift, cater an event or even grab a treat for yourself. It is a Los Angeles treasure.
