Ye Olde Los Angeles – A Visit to Avila Adobe

Recently, I went to Olvera Street for only the second time in my life. It may seem shocking to some but I’m not really a fan of the place. While I appreciate the history it’s too much of a tourist trap and between it and Old Town San Diego I guess I’ve had my fill.

But I decided to venture there recently to visit a historic site hidden amongst the food and knick knack vendors – Avila Adobe. Walking through the densely packed area I found this sign.

Which led me down this alleyway.
Into this courtyard.
The Avila Adobe is a rancho that was built in 1818. It was the home of Jose Avila, a prominent ranchero and former mayor of Los Angeles. It served as the family home until 1868 when the current inhabitants moved to Anaheim. After this the rancho served various purposes until it fell into disrepair. Luckily, this historic structure was saved and now houses a museum. (source)

As you can see it contains some lovely artifacts from early life in Los Angeles.

And the courtyard is a nice respite from the crowds just outside the door on Olvera Street.
