Pancakes Fit for The King – Breakfast at The Blackbird Cafe

I’m gonna be honest here. I don’t really like pancakes. I know, it’s totally unAmerican but what can I say? They just don’t thrill me. Unless, they’re dolled up in some way like the Funny Face Pancake at IHOP. Then we may be in business.

Well, the other day I stopped for breakfast at The Blackbird Cafe in the California Heights area of Long Beach. My sister had heard rave reviews on good ole Yelp so we decided to check it out. Getting there was easy, it’s just off the 405 at the Orange exit. Parking? Not so much. There is no actual lot – street parking only. Since there was road work happening we ended up parking down the block and hauling it to the cafe. But since I’m able bodied I can’t really complain.

And the Blackbird Cafe is definitely worth the effort.

Those, my friends, are the Peanut Buttah Honey Pancakes. The pancake batter has peanut butter and honey mixed in and is topped with sliced bananas which makes it oh so yummy. And it’s ginormous! There are two pancakes on that plate. It was so huge that I could only eat half of it. And guess how much it set me back? 5 smackers (4.95 to be exact). That’s it! What a bargain!

And be sure to grab a drink. They’ve got a whole menu of lattes and such. My sis opted for a mocha and this is what she got.

A delicious drink in a bowl cup. It’s hard to tell in the pic but that cup is huge! It would definitely be a venti in Strabuckanese. And you gotta love Fiestaware.

So for giant portions of deliciousness be sure to visit the Blackbird Cafe!
