Bailey On the Back Bay

Oh, hello there! I didn’t see you as I was too distracted by the view ahead of me. Lovely, isn’t it?

Well, I’m happy to be back with another guest post. If you don’t remember me, my name is Bailey and I’m one of Melanie’s closest buds. I’m usually the one who accompanies her on her outdoor adventures and sometimes I get to write about it. Like today! So let’s get started, shall we?

Recently, I discovered another fabulous Southern California park – the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve. Dang! That’s quite a mouthful. Let’s just refer to it as the Back Bay from now on (makes it easier on my paws; it’s not too easy typing with these things).

Located in Newport Beach it’s a beautiful open space in an area clogged with housing tracts and shopping malls. There’s lots of trails and most of them offer a view of the bay.
And everyone is welcome! Hikers, dogs, horses…and my favorite, bicycles! I don’t know what it is about those things but every time they pass by I just want to run right after them!

And the trails come in many varieties – pave or unpaved, hill or flat, inland or by the water.

Speaking of water – kayaks are also allowed to! It’s not something that pertains to me but Melanie wanted me to mention it as it’s one of her favorite outdoor activities. Anyway, back to the walking. Well, it’s nice. There’s lots of plants to sniff, critters to hunt, er, watch, and birds to envy as they glide through the air.

And for you humans, they also have an interpretive center.

I’m not allowed inside, but I do get to go on the roof.

That’s where I am in the very first picture.

The only bad part is this –

About every five minutes one of these flies by because apparently the bay is under the flight path of John Wayne Airport. I don’t mind it so much but these things are so dang loud that it kind of ruins the peacefulness of the surroundings. But, as they say, I guess that’s life in the big city.
