King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh Comes to LA

In 1922 Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun and, it can be argued, the world has never been the same since. The discovery set the world ablaze with Egyptomania and folks have been obsessed with King Tut ever since. As one fascinated by the Art Deco era I can’t help but find the young king’s treasures intriguing. To celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the tomb’s discovery King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh is now on display at California Science Center and I was invited to check it out.

Although there have been previous King Tut exhibitions in Los Angeles this one is by far the largest with over 150 artifacts on display. In addition, 60 have never before left Egypt!

The last King Tut exhibition came to LA in 2005 and, somehow, I missed it. So, I was pretty excited to finally get the chance to view the historic treasures. And with this exhibit’s new summer hours of 9am-9pm (with last admission at 7:30pm) it was perfect timing so last week, after work, I headed to Exposition Park to check it out.

Taking up two floors of the museum the exhibit is an extensive overview of the tomb’s vast treasures. Incredibly detailed and beautifully preserved they certainly don’t show their age!

Over and over again I had to remind myself these items were over 3,300 years old.

Each display case is accompanied by a video offering further insight into the items on display making the exhibition both informative and entertaining.

When I visited on a weekday evening I found the museum to be well attended by both adults and children. Young and old alike were visibly fascinated and it was heartwarming to see kids show such a keen interest in history.

Viewing King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh is the perfect summer vacation activity. Entertaining for people of all ages it’s well worth visiting so be sure to stop by before it closes! Tickets are available here.
