An Evening with Winnie The Pooh in Culver City

When I was a little tyke Loggins & Messina had a hit with House at Pooh Corner and I just loved it. Little did I know that that sweet song would start my life long love of A.A. Milne’s most famous character. I, of course,  have seen every cartoon, made sure to catch the film Christopher Robin as soon as it opened (and still think it’s an underrated gem) and still smile every time I get a glimpse of that silly old bear. So when I was invited to attend a performance of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation, currently at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City, I made sure to go.

Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation debuted last year in New York and was an immediate success, running for over 100 performances. Now, it’s made it way to the west coast for the holidays and is being performed at the Kirk Douglas Theater for a limited six week run through December 30.

Adapted from the beloved children’s stories, featuring such classic Sherman Brothers songs as The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers and brought to life through the magic of puppetry, Winnie the Pooh is the perfect all ages show (and with a running time of 1 hour even the youngest audience members will be entertained).

I was lucky enough to attend the opening night performance and was utterly delighted by the show. The life-sized puppets faithfully recreate the adorable characters from the Disney cartoons and are beautifully brought to life by the puppeteers. From the moment Pooh uttered his first “oh bother” I felt a smile come across my face and it remained there for the entire enjoyable hour.

In this cynical age, Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation is a dose of happiness and positivity in its most purest form and is especially apt for this holiday season. I absolutely loved it and am sure you will, too.
